RayTrace

NOW OPEN SOURCE / MIT LICENSED

RayTrace CLI is
open source.

The local recorder and dashboard are live on GitHub and npm. Built for developers who want to see what their coding agents actually did. Free to use, MIT licensed, and ready for your contributions.

A SMALLER DISTANCE TO UNDERSTANDING

Start with a real session.

When a coding agent surprises you, the final answer rarely explains the whole path. RayTrace puts prompts, tool calls, reported results, usage, and the session timeline in one local dashboard.

npm install -g @raytrace-cli/cli
raytrace setup

Then use Claude Code as usual and open http://127.0.0.1:8797. Node.js 22.13+ and npm are required. Basic Claude Code recording needs no additional API key.

What’s open source.

The MIT-licensed CLI includes the command-line setup and service controls, local capture proxy, Claude Code hook, Codex launcher, and bundled dashboard. This is the local developer release of RayTrace.

Explore with the CLI

  • Capture Claude Code sessions through a managed hook.
  • Run Codex through RayTrace with an OpenRouter key.
  • Inspect prompts, context, tool calls, and reported results.
  • Review available cost data and session timelines.
  • Keep recorded sessions in local SQLite storage.

Beyond this release

The CLI does not include the Lima/gVisor sandbox, independent sandbox process evidence, snapshot-based Playground forks, sign-in, or cloud sandboxes.

The website also illustrates experimental sandbox workflows. Read the advanced documentation for their requirements.

Why open source?

Understanding an agent should start with something you can try and inspect yourself. Opening the local tools makes it easier to explore how capture works, reproduce a confusing session, and contribute improvements from real development workflows.

Try it on a small project. Tell us where the trace helped, where setup got in the way, and what you wanted to understand next. Report a bug, suggest a feature, or open a pull request. Help us make agent debugging better for everyone.

Your machine. Your trace.

The recorder stores traces on your machine. Optional provider-backed features make external API calls: OpenRouter powers summaries, action explanations, and Codex routing. These may incur provider charges. See the privacy and release scope before enabling them.
